I get it, you’ve been dreaming about your wedding day for so long, put so much effort into making everything perfect and putting thought into every little detail to make your day unique to you, and now and then a little tinge of worry pops into your head. “what if it rains on my wedding day” what if everyone is miserable and looking grumpy. I’ll let you in on a little secret, they won’t be. Everyone plans to have a good day, they plan on having lots of fun, watching you happy and loved up, eating delicious food, cake, drinking, and being merry. So let’s have a chat about what to do if it rains on your wedding day.

Devise a plan

It’s always a great idea to plan for all of the options weather wise. 

I’ve photographed sunny winter weddings and stormy summer weddings we go through all of the options. 

Talk to your photographer and devise a little plan, they’ll already have an idea of what to do in each circumstance, make sure you talk it over, so on the day you won’t need to worry about a thing and you have total trust in the plan and what you’ll be doing. 

More often than not, it will only rain for part of the day, so get yourself some big umbrellas and some funky wellies. 

If you’re worried about your guests then get some spare wooly blankets or pashminas, nothing shows love in a photo more than being cwtched up, keeping each other warm and cosy. 

Embrace the day

If it’s raining, then it’s totally up to you what you’d like to do, there are always options, indoors somewhere with clever camera angles and lighting. 

I’m a big fan of embracing what the day is, let’s go outside in the wild stormy weather, something magical happens when you’re with your loved one in the rain having your photos taken, there’s something about the photos that really speak of what marriage is, it’s gorgeous and wonderful and sometimes a little stormy but if you have each other to hold tightly onto, and keep each other warm and safe then you’re winning! In bad weather, you’ll know that the sky looks SO dramatic and add to the atmosphere in the photos. 

One of the reasons every couple worry about rain on the wedding day is its because we can’t control it, and of course, we all want gorgeous warm weather and beautiful sunsets, but let’s twist this, let’s make a plan for all eventualities, let’s control what we’ll do if it does rain. So to stop any sleepless nights I’ll make some promises to you – your wedding will be gorgeous, your wedding will be full of love, there will be plenty of cwtching, everyone will have a great time, and if it does rain you don’t need to worry, we’ve got it, we’ll have a plan, we’ll know what we’re doing, and you’ll have amazing memories to last you a lifetime.

– and for this one by soaked they really mean it, We were wet through. This was a gorgeous winter wedding, an adventurous couple and so there was no other way of getting the shots we wanted on the day without getting a tad *lot wet. 

Top tips

Have a plan B

Get yourself some big umbrellas

Bring some funky wellies / or shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy

Have a coat/blanket at hand to wrap around you between shots and on the walk to the location. 

Have a few blankets ready for guests.
